Since coming to Australia four years ago, Alex has had a knockout response to some of his songs.
In the tradition of the old-school Tin-Pan Alley writers, having songs covered by some
GREAT Australian, European and US, artists.
Songwriter Enda Kenny recorded the 'Port Fairy Song Award' finalist, 'Were You There'
Watching his buddies, Crawfish Dave, Alex mis-heard a back-up vocal as
'Cupids Graveyard' (the PA system at the Rainbow, Fitzroy is notoriously crepe!) It was in fact, 'Paul's Playhouse' they were
singing. So off he went on a lyrical search for Cupid's Graveyard, a whole idea contained in a nifty title, you'll agree.
Martin Pearson recorded 'Were You There' AND 'Where the Ghost Gum Grows' on his 'Songs of Sedition and Swing' album.
A performer by name of Malcolm Turnbull has also recorded the song
Sydney band, Wheelers and Dealers have recorded 'Cold in the Doorway' one of 26 songs that closed Cindy Kent's
Afternoon Show, each Friday on London's Premier Radio, over 26 weeks.
Judy Turner's "Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club' included 'What a Day it's Been' on their latest release.
The Nudgels have just recorded "Cupid's Graveyard"
Leggsongs have been doing well in Global contests too.
'Were You There' won last year's Peace-driven awards.
'Too Many Children' took a place in the Singer-songwriter awards and Leggsong, 'Heaven Help Me' won online
Music Community, Broadjam's 'Peer Review' and has since been covered by Allman Brothers keys-player, Johnny Neel.
An exciting association with Cole Clark Guitars has just begun, since Alex' unique percussive guitar style
caught the ear of Leading Australian guitar-maker Bradley Clark, genius designer and manufacturer of Cole Clark Guitars!
He joins LLOYD SPIEGEL and other great artists, in endorsment of these fine instruments and says,
"It is a privilege to be associated with Bradley and the Cole Clark team and to be allowed to play these beautiful,
boat-rocking, Weapons of Expression"
These weapons of expression are currently occupied on a new CD project of songs which take the whole socio/political scenario
to task over the Global misbehaviour of Bush, Brown, Howard, Blair and their (Far) Rt. (Dis) Honourable NeoConservative
Corporate cronies.
long biography
Songwriter ALEX LEGG played in his first band at age 14. With his band, FELIX, alongside Dundee's Graeme Hall
playing all over the place. Joined, as bass-player, Aberdeen based, HEDGEHOG PIE, featuring songwriter FRANK ROBB, an early
influence.
Arriving in London, 1975 to play with GARY MOORE sidemen PEARSE KELLY & JOHN CURTIS. Hanging out at Winchester Mews
Studios, Alex met and was writing with pop icon, HAZEL O'CONNOR. A year with Irish AOR singer/songwriter LEE LYNCH,
playing Irish venues from Cricklewood to Kerry. Then his own band, THE WONDERFULS, playing that uniquely 70/80s
genre defined as Pub Rock! Who could forget those Sunday Nights in the now demolished, SPURS, on the Roundway in
Tottenham, a regular hangout for PAUL YOUNG and IAN KEWLEY of Q-TIPS, members of WISHBONE ASH plus a
GROUNDHOG or two.
A spell playing bass with North London Band, CABDRIVERS and another venture, RHYTHM TRAX with guitarist TREVOR WOOD.
Why that band never ended up being called WOOD'N'LEGG, we'll never know... some memorable MARQUEE and ROCK GARDEN
gigs though..
While busking in Oxford Circus underground station, he met his one-time manager, MACDONALD MIDDLETON. Mac & Alex had
an association that lasted a fruitful five years. During this period Alex had three songs, 'DOWN & OUT & SORRY',
'FIND THE LOVE YOU NEED IN ME' and 'HERE AM I' covered by soul singer, STEVE MYERS and 'KEEP A CANDLE BURNING' by
MODERN ROMANCE.
Then followed THE WAY, with ex-PETER GABRIEL, PETER HAMILL and VIBRATORS guitarist JOHN ELLIS, occupied another two
years. THE WAY somewhat lost it, after the support of publisher, LORIMAR collapsed in a takeover by Warner Brothers.
Ellis headed off to help replace Hugh Cornwell in THE STRANGLERS. THE WAY manager, Jonathan Cooke introduced Alex to
GREENBELT FESTIVAL, which he first played in 1989.
During a writing session with songwriter, JOHN BEEBY, Alex met Australian singer, JENNY SMITH, now his estranged wife and
mother of ANGUS, born in 1995. The newly-married pair contributed to some unforgettable nights at US percussionist
EUGENE JONES' LONDON SONGWRITERS SHOWCASE in THE CAFÉ DE PIAF on the concourse at Waterloo Station. A great Showcase
favourite was Alex's song 'TOO MANY CHILDREN' winning a 'best of the best' session. Appearances at the showcase led
to a residency at the Café. JENNY and ALEX LEGG have recorded three albums of Legg songs and five albums of Children's
songs for gospel label ICC Records, and have toured regularly, playing events and Festivals in UK, HOLLAND, GERMANY,
SPAIN and AUSTRALIA. In October 2002, Alex was in Nashville writing with Larry Henley, Casey Kelly, Margaret Becker,
Phil Madeira, Billy Sprague & others.
HEALESVILLE is an earthy bag of songs from the Celtic soul of a man who has lived a life and a half.
